With The Barking Deer no closer to becoming the microbrewery it was meant to be when it opened, it’s anyone guess if our city will ever get one. Add to that list of potentials The White Owl, a spiffy new venue that will open inside One Indiabulls Center on Friday, May 31, as a restaurant and bar, before it launches as a fully functional microbrewery. ”We want to get it absolutely right before we open [as a microbrewery],” says owner Javed Murad, who worked in the financial services sector in New York before he moved back to Mumbai in 2011. “But it’s safe to say we don’t see any hurdles, and it’s only a matter of time before we do [get our licences for the microbrewery].”

The 2,500 square feet establishment, where everything from the forks to the ceiling has been conceptualised by design studio Obataimu, has its brewing equipment all set up (you can spy the machinery in the image above through the glass windows behind the bar). Chef Kshama Prabhu, who comes here from a stint as head chef at Moshe’s via The Tasting Room, will helm the kitchen and menu of shared plates, sandwiches, entrees and salads, which include Mexican-style corn on the cob with parmesan and chilli powder, chorizo hot dog, mac ’n’ cheese made with Grana Padano and Gruyere, and baby lamb chops. While beer nuts await the brew machines to be put into use, they can try some of the bar’s many concoctions such as the Biddy (whisky, triple sec, orange chunks, egg white), the Meesh (Bailey’s, cranberry bits, chipotle) and the Tanner (tequila, pineapple wedges, mixed bell peppers).

A meal will cost around Rs800 to Rs1,000 per head; a bottle of Kingfisher is priced at Rs235.
