The Vigil Idiot: Student Of The Year

October 22, 2012 7:42 am by

Director Karan Johar’s Student of the Year stars his former assistant director Siddharth Malhotra (as Beefcake Abhimanyu), David Dhawan’s son Varun Dhawan (as Beefcake 2 Rohan), and Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter Alia Bhatt (as clueless Shanaya). There’s also a role in there for Boman Irani’s son Kayoze Irani for good measure. Now, I’m all for nepotism in Bollywood. Sometimes, good things can come out of it (the director of this film not being the least of them). Then again, sometimes you get Uday Chopra. This isn’t that bad, honestly. The kids do manage to hold fort admirably enough. That’s more than can be said of the script, though, as you’ll find out soon enough.

So, I read this listening to ‘ajeeb dastan hai yeh, kahaan shuru kahaan khatam’. Epic combo. Nice review, I couldn’t stop laughing. :P

    Great reviews man!
Your reviews are really humorous and creative. Keep up the awesome work! :)

    Hi Sahil ,
You reviews are simply brilliant and provides us with such a satirical angle on such brainless movies. Producers like Johar make these only to spin some money as they make up the budget these days even before the film is released with satellite rights and other marketing gimmicks. Thank God for people like you because honestly this is the best review one can ask for.
I would sincerely request you to do your magic on a movie released in 2002 called Jaani Dushman : Ek Anokhi Kahani. It is considered an all time raspberry awards contender in India. The only tough time is sitting through the 3 hours . Please consider this as a fan request.
    Cheers ,
    Rahul

you are a comic genius. yo …..
    kudos to you
and now about something i found in this film did anyone realise that in “karan johars” movie there is a character who is a ‘fat gay mommas boy who is infatuated with some guy he works with ‘ similar much ….

Must be story of the school where Karan Johar studied.. what else can you expect?

Best part of this strip was “The two girls who qualified for the triathlon final finished nowhere near the boys”.. “Real shocker” :P :P .. Seriously, how can you expect boys and girls complete in same athletic event?

  6. Dude you are fucking awesome

  9. Never watch Bollywood movies. Read your review and thought would catch some glimpses of this movie on YouTube (just for laughing ever more heartily at the hilarious stuff you’ve mentioned).
Watched some upload for 3 min. Dunno which mindless teenage Hollywood movie this is a copy of (complete with high school sports and cheerleader culture which simply doesn’t exist in India), but all in all – I realized I was better off never watching Bollywood. :D

U missed the point where in a race, Abhimanyu has sufficient time to find Ashok Nanda , figure out his expression from so far and decide immediately he wants to lost the race.

  37. Varun |

Boss, this stuff is mind-blowing. I was sitting in a lecture and burst out laughing.
By the way, you forgot, the “gay-dean” bit, and the ishw wala love song :P

  38. Loved your “review” :) … but I will admit to enjoying the movie… That’s the thing with KJo movies – you know they will be full of illogical shit but weird as it may be, I still find them fun enough for a one-time watch. But it was great to see the newcomers hold their own in a seriously flawed movie. The eye candies certainly didn’t hurt. :)
