Photographer Javed Iqbal Puts The Focus On Central India
View Slideshow In 2008, Javed Iqbal was smitten by a “strange wanderlust”. So the 28-year-old journalist and photographer from Mumbai travelled across central India, visiting Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and parts of Andhra Pradesh. “Eventually I started documenting things around me, such as problems faced by adivasis,” said Iqbal, who reported for the New Indian Express from Chhatisgarh, before returning to Mumbai in 2011 to work as a freelance writer. “The complete lack of media coverage was disturbing.” Iqbal’s photographs from his stay in central India will be shown at Studio X from Thursday, September 13, as part of Ghar, the first exhibition organised by Khanabadosh, a new arts non-profit started by Times of India journalist Gitanjali Dang. The pictures Iqbal will display document problems faced by adivasis living in central India’s Maoist strongholds, the displacement of people by infrastructure projects in Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand and Orissa and slum demolitions in Mumbai.
