On Monday, April 9, friends and comic book enthusiasts Utsa Shome, Bidisha Basu and Koel Chatterjee launched the Leaping Windows cafe and comic books library in Andheri. “We always intended to move into a physical space, but hadn’t found the correct location,” said Basu, who launched Leaping Windows as an online comic books library with Shome and Chatterjee in June 2010. The basement of their split-level Yari Road establishment serves as the library and reading room, where you will find graphic novels and comics in the categories of fantasy, crime, superhero, and slice-of-life. You need to pay Rs30 an hour to use the reading room or can sign up for a three-month Leaping Windows membership. The Rs1,500 membership fee allows you to borrow an unlimited number of books.

About 30 people can be accommodated in the cafe area, where the food, which is sourced from home caterers across the city, includes sandwiches (peanut butter and jelly; chutney; tuna), salads, cutlets, and desserts (cheesecake, mud pie, and cupcakes). Tea, coffee and cold drinks such as masala Thumbs Up form the beverages menu. The cafe will also have daily specials such as curd-rice.
