Oldie But Goodie: Cloud 9

Cloud 9 is only a decade old but it’s already an institution for couples enrolled in colleges in South Mumbai. Located on the rooftop of the three-star Hotel Godwin in one of Colaba’s leafy lanes, Cloud 9’s biggest draw is the al fresco area with its light-brown tiles, white wrought-iron chairs and great views of Mumbai’s skyline. Even on a foggy day you can catch a glimpse of the sea and the Gateway of India. The indoor section is only worth sitting in for respite from the heat. Ten years on, the ambience at Cloud 9 is still as laid-back and cosy as it was when it first opened. It remains popular with the college crowd thanks to its cheap prices: rum and vodka for Rs70; beer bottles for Rs140 at most; a glass of Black Label for Rs200. Come here when you want a leisurely drink, not only to take in the calm surroundings but also because while the staff is hospitable, the service is slow. The menu is reminiscent of those served in the city’s sports clubs—North Indian and desi Chinese fare with some continental options thrown in. We recommend sticking to tandoori dishes and snacks. The only downside to Cloud 9: you have to finish your drinking session well before midnight as the bar wraps up by 11pm so as not to disturb hotel guests.
