Koffee With Karan Season 4 Recap: Aamir Khan And Kiran Rao

Koffee With KaranAfter interviewing Shah Rukh Khan in the first and third season of Koffee With Karan and opening the fourth season with Salman Khan, all that was left to complete the holy trinity was the third and final member of the Khan troika. But unlike Salman Khan, who said he had stayed away from KJo’s couch out of fear of his nosy questions, Aamir Khan was more blunt: “I didn’t like what I had heard,” he said of Johar, who looked like he was having a hard time swallowing that lump in his throat (anyone else felt like giving KJo a hug?). In fact much was made of Khan’s honesty, and his wife Kiran Rao’s relative normalcy compared to the other cuckoos in Bwood, not all of which rang true. As always, we sniff out the bullshit factor, rating it on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being a crock o’ Leprechaun gold, and 1 being honest-to-God sainthood.

Aamir Khan Doesn’t Care About Making Money
It’s a little hard to believe Khan when he says he cares more about working on quality scripts than setting box office records. It’s true that films like Lagaan and 3 Idiots became huge hits despite being unconventional according to Bollywood standards. But what of Ghajini, a Hindi remake of a Tamil film “inspired” by Memento, in which Khan grunts more than he speaks? Or Dhoom 3, a big budget franchise whose trailer suggests more than a passing resemblance to The Dark Knight trilogy? “The reason I’m doing Dhoom 3 is not numbers but because I love the script,” he said. Cue in the beep of a bullshit buzzer.

Aamir Khan Is (Mostly) All Praise For His Fellow Khans
By now it’s a given that if you’re a Khan in feud with another Khan, you will when grilled about it on KJo’s couch, pretend like you have nothing but the fondest respect and love for your Khan-nemy. So when Johar said that Salman Khan thought Aamir Khan is the country’s biggest star, Khan (Aamir) naturally returned the compliment in kind, saying Khan (Salman), is the real deal, has “raw brute power” and that “he just has to shake his belt a few times” to make the box office rain gold. Later, in the rapid fire round, Khan said that Salman reminds him of a lion because the animal orders his lionesses to do his bidding (and ahem, preys on innocent little creatures like black bucks and bloggers.) Khan was more careful while talking about Khan (Shah Rukh), saying that “there’s a genuine regard and respect for each others’ work and also a certain amount of guardedness” and “moments of stress in the relationship”.

Apparently Aamir Khan Has A Sense Of Humour
When asked to list three things people don’t know about her husband, Kiran Rao, who looked the best she ever has in a structured peplum and red pencil skirt, said that he has an eating disorder, hates bathing and has a great sense of humour. We’ll have to take Rao’s word for it because Khan was so terribly earnest on the show that for a minute we wondered whether he thought he was shooting for Satyamev Jayate. But it appeared to be the truth backed up by his nephew Imran Khan who said via video that Khan once pranked him at boarding school, by sending him a box of cardboard pellets disguised as chewing gum. Three of his co-stars also lent credence to this character trait, saying that Khan would reduce her to tears with his jokes (Juhi Chawla), that he reminded her of a squirrel (Madhuri Dixit), and that he looked like an elf (Sonali Bendre).

Aamir Khan Is Just Your Average Bollywood Superstar
Though Khan, unlike his fellow Bollywood biggies, said he doesn’t dance at weddings (“I don’t like to feel like I’m on sale”), is in one of the most normal-seeming and well-adjusted marriages to a Bollywood outsider, and only one of the most respected Bollywood actors working today, Khan felt the need to deny it, all of it. When asked by Johar to rate himself as a husband, actor and father, he said he was 5/10 or just “average”. Which we suppose is just one up from Salman Khan’s confession that he was a “below average” actor compared to his peers. So if we’re reading this correctly, India’s two biggest stars are either phonies pulling a quick one over their adored masses, or genius at the art of acting like they can’t act. Either way, Aamir Khan’s BS rating just spiked a few.

BULLSHIT FACTOR
Aamir Khan 7/10
Kiran Rao 4/10
Karah Johar 5/10
