Hear How Max ZT Put The Santoor In The Hammered Dulcimer
New York-based hammered dulcimer player Max ZT (the initials stand for Zbiral-Teller) once described his concerts as: “a Persian santoor being played by an American who grew up playing Irish music“. Indeed, ZT has done a fair bit to take the sounds of hammered dulcimer, which is believed to have been invented 5,000 years ago in Persia, across the world. ZT, who studied Hindustani classical music under legendary santoor player Shivkurma Sharma in Mumbai and West African music with a kora player in Senegal, has incorporated both forms into his playing style. He will talk about melding cultures in his music at a lecture-demonstration organised by the Asia Society, as part of its “Asia Buzz” series of events, on Monday, October 29, at 6.30pm. The 45-minute performance, which will be followed by a Q&A session, will see ZT telling the audience about his self-made new instrument, which he says attempts to “incorporate the best of both”, the hammered dulcimer and the santoor. “It’s easier to play chromatic scales on the santoor, while the dulcimer has a larger range and is louder,” said ZT, who will touch upon the similarities between West African and Hindustani classical music. Entry is free but requires an RSVP by emailing asiasociety@asiasociety.org.in.
