First Look At Starbucks Mumbai

October 19, 2012 4:10 pm by

You may either love or loathe Starbucks, the American chain of coffee shops, but if you live in Mumbai, you can’t possibly ignore it today. Only a few hours remain before the black curtain that has shrouded the flagship India Starbucks store in Fort, is taken down. After a quick peek at the store we can tell you that it has a mezzanine, two service counters, and communal tables. The teakwood furnished store, reportedly spread across 4,000 square feet, is decked in a warm rust and coffee brown palette. Photographs of Indian scenery share wall space with blackboards scribbled with brewing tips and other Starbucks trivia. As with Starbucks outposts worldwide, the Mumbai store also reeks of coffee.

The beverage menu features a long list of espresso-based drinks including the Americano, latte, caramel macchiato, and white chocolate mocha, available in short, tall, grande, and venti sizes. Fans of the chai latte—their version of masala chai—can choose from green tea latte, chai tea latte, and full-leaf brewed tea, which are prepared using Tata Tazo, a premium range of teas. The frappuccino list features such flavours as caramel, mocha, espresso, white chocolate mocha, and Java chip. The food menu offers coffee shop staples such as croissants, pies, muffins, sandwiches and pastries. These include chatpata paratha wrap; salmon and cream cheese croissant; elaichi mawa croissant; chicken and mushroom pie; Sumatra coffee chocolate eclair; and banana coconut muffin. And for those wondering about the chain’s expansion pace, the Associated Press has reported that two more outlets will open in Mumbai as early as next week, though the locations are as yet unknown. Prices range from Rs80 for a single shot of espresso to Rs200 for a venti caramel frappuccino and are exclusive of taxes.

Starbucks is slated to open on Saturday, October 20 at 8am.

This is a question for all those that have already gotten a cuppa joe at the store: are powder coffee creamers available for purchase?

Don’t want to be a downer on the excitement of a global coffee superpower rolling into the city, but be warned: Starbucks’ stories about its business and its tax payments are not just tall but grande.

“Starbucks made over £3bn in UK sales since 1998 but paid less than 1% in corporation tax.”
