ACP Vasant Dhoble Will Be Too Busy To Raid Bars

On Monday, September 17, Mumbai Mirror scared us by reporting that ACP Vasant Dhoble would continue to bother nightclubs and bars in the Western suburbs in his new role as the head of the Vakola division of the Mumbai Police. However if today’s edition of The Times of India is to be believed, Dhoble will be too busy with routine police work to raid bars. Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said that Dhoble will be doing his duty “as a normal police officer”.

To prove just how preoccupied Dhoble will be, the article lists his activities in surprising detail. He will be going on night rounds, participating in bandobasts and visiting police stations among other things. Dhoble, who was “paler than his normally ebullient self”, was quoted saying, “I have no personal agenda and I will do my job as per the order of seniors”.

It’s amazing how shallow the reporting was of this Dhoble saga. Did a single reporter (or activist) actually bother to uncover who was responsible for unleashing that goon on the city and what their agenda was in doing so? Dhoble was nothing more than a pawn who collected a few rupees and got his name in the paper in exchange for being the scapegoat.

What would really be worth exploring is how much money was made by the politicians directing this drama and what additional hurdles restaurants/bars/clubs now face.
