A New Facebook Group Is Just The Ticket For Theatre Fans

If you’re always complaining about your philistine friends who whinge when dragged to a play, then you’ll want to bookmark It’s Showtime, a Facebook group that organises trips to the theatre. “I wanted to go for plays, but there are very few that enjoy the style, because a play is pretty slow compared to a movie,” says founder Salonee Sanghvi Doshi, an equity analyst, who launched the group this past May, with the idea that fellow theatre fans would never again face the prospect of attending a show by themselves. Such is the popularity of the group, that though it’s only about 100-people strong, attendance has steadily increased with each successive outing, going from around eight people for the first event to about 30. Doshi usually picks comedies, and often polls the group for their preferences as well. So far they’ve already caught showings of Anything But Love, Foursome and The Class Act, with the next one—the marathon mini-act One on One—scheduled for Friday, September 21 at Prithvi Theatre. Membership is open to all though as a precautionary measure, Doshi says they do ensure that someone in the group knows a new member (most fall within the 24 to 32 age bracket and are evenly split between men and women). The plan is to add post-play drinks to the agenda, and eventually expand the activities to include viewings of indie films. To join, visit the Facebook page.
