Watch BLOT! At Their Album Launch This Saturday Night

Don’t forget to ask for your 3D glasses when you attend BLOT!’s album launch gig this Saturday, September 8 at Blue Frog. BLOT! aka the Delhi-based “audio-visual” duo of electronic music producer Gaurav Malekar and visual jockey Avinash Kumar will screen 20 minutes of 3D images during the show, which they’re hoping to make one of their most memorable till date. The gig, which is the last stop on their five-city tour of the country, is essentially the live version of their recently-released debut album Snafu! (the name, as you may know, is a military slang term that stands for “situation normal: all fucked up”). You can expect to hear each of the album’s ten tracks (listen to the preview here) but not in the order or exact form in which they appear on the CD. A more club-friendly take on Snafu!, the gig is divided into two parts; the first half will comprise the “more melodic stuff” while the second half will feature the techno productions that BLOT! has come to be known for, which they will play to the backdrop of the aforementioned 3D images.

Look out for a number of guest artists at the launch, which Malekar called “a slightly coordinated jam”. Peter Cat Recording Co. frontman Suryakant Sawhney whose heavily processed vocals you hear on the album track “Tatemae” won’t be singing but playing guitar and keyboard; Another Vertigo Rush member Akshat Nauriyal will be manning the drums; and vocalist Vasundhara of capital-based duo Adil and Vasundhara will perform “NDX”, the song she sings on the album. Unlike in the studio, when Malekar is often inspired to compose music to visuals created by Kumar—for instance, the tunes “Barcelona in A Minor” and “Scurry” are soundtracks to travelogues by Kumar—at their gigs, it’s Kumar who is spontaneously “remixing” images to accompany Malekar’s sounds. “Each track has a very distinct visual reference—[from] classic cinema [and] video games [to] minimalistic graphics,” said Malekar. “[For instance] ‘Tatemae’ starts off with metallic sounds [so you see] the electricity lines in Delhi and a very grungy texture [and] it evolves from there.”
