The Oberoi’s Patisserie Reopens With A New Menu And Look

The Bolivia.
For residents of Colaba, Cuffe Parade and Nariman Point, before there was Indigo Deli or Nature’s Basket or Theobroma, there was The Gourmet Shoppe, a one- and maybe only-stop for sugar doughnuts, imported cheese and deli meats (which included, we recall, an impressive selection of sausages, both pork and beef). The Gourmet Shoppe, located in the shopping arcade of The Oberoi hotel for the last 25 years, may have lost some of its appeal in the wake of snazzier competition, but hopes to now reposition itself with a renovation and menu upgrade.
In addition to newly painted tangerine walls and a new name, the decidedly less quaint The Oberoi Patisserie and Delicatessen, there’s a new selection of sweet and savoury treats, plus an oven to roll out freshly baked croissants, Danish pastries and quiches through the day. There are grab-and-go salads and sandwiches, as before, but more cold cuts and cheeses on offer, including streaky bacon, Italian salami, mortadella, Edam and Emmethal. There are also macaroons (Rs575 for a box of eight) in flavours like vanilla caramel, key lime and wild berry; and quiches (Rs196) with fillings like candied onion and haloumi cheese, thyme roast mushroom and chevre, and smoked chicken and roast garlic.
From what we sampled here’s what we recommend: the buttery croissants (Rs112), taken straight out of the oven at around 10am; the flaky pain au chocolat (Rs100); and the staff-recommended Bolivia (Rs250), a textured dessert that combines chocolate with 68 per cent cocoa, a hint of coffee, a crunchy chocolate finger, and Rice Krispies. Long-time fans, don’t despair: favourites such as the chocolate truffle cake, pineapple fresh cream gateaux, and Black Forest are still on the menu. The patisserie will also soon organise cooking demos and baking classes at the store.
