Art Of The Day: Monkeying Around

"Portrait of Landscapes II" (2012)

With her hooded eyes, this fair-tressed maiden looks admittedly worse for wear. But perhaps you would too if you had a blue-faced monkey nestled in your hair. “It’s a psychological portrait,” says artist Anj Smith, who took nine painstaking months to complete this and six other oil on linen works currently showing at Galerie Isa in Kala Ghoda. Smith, a British artist of some note, pulls stylistic influences from Hieronymus Bosch and Albrecht Dürer to create her luminous oils, but anchors them in the present by popping in contemporary markers. Look closely at the painting and you’ll see Miu Miu trinkets on the woman’s collar and a broken “I LOVE” badge pinned to the Liberty print, not to mention a couple of errant furry tails twined in her hair. “It’s like she’s built an armour from the debri of her environment” says Smith.
