Why Is Sagarika Ghose Trending On Twitter?

When Sagarika Ghose trends on Twitter, it’s usually for the wrong reasons. A member of the quartet of the most ridiculed Indian TV journalists—Arnab Goswami, Rajdeep Sardesai and Barkha Dutt are her distinguished colleagues—Ghose riled users of the micro-blogging site by tweeting that she’s all for “monitoring/controlling” the Internet, especially Twitter, if it means curbing “communal hate mongering”. Her tweets were in response to the exodus of North Easterners from across the country to their home states, which the government blames on rumours spread by social media. Her comments spawned the hashtag #sagarikasuggests, which takes you to a series of farcical tweets such as “Make all Twitter users put their pancards as DPs” and “#sagarikasuggests that Dilip Kumar be investigated ’cause that ain’t his real name.”
