Store Review: Adie—A Design Is Everything

Our go-to place for fashion bargains is a warren of narrow lanes around Mini Punjab in Khar that is populated by export surplus stores that stock on-trend and inexpensive women’s wear sourced from Bangkok. The newest shop in the neighbourhood, Adie—A Design Is Everything, is not an export surplus one but the flagship store of designer Meghna Dukle.

Dukle, who is a National Institute of Design graduate, has managed to add a lot of character to her tiny garage space, located in the same building as the dessert shop Dolcemente Italia. Decorative features include wooden bookshelves; framed covers of old issues of The New Yorker; and a comfortable planter chair, perhaps for bored boyfriends, who can listen to the light jazz soundtrack or browse through a smattering of art and fashion books while you shop. At Adie, you will find both newer designs as well as pieces from Dukle’s first collection of dresses and tunics, which she sold at boutiques such as Sobo in Hughes Road and Bliss in Andheri West.

We found plenty of peplum and polka dots in her collection of tunics and tops, which are refreshingly embellishment-free. Dukle has worked with a delicious palette of colours such as mustard yellow, pomegranate pink, green apple, ivory, canary yellow and aquamarine that are ideal for daywear. In addition to linen, cotton and crepe silk, she uses Georgette quite liberally. While it’s an easy flowing fabric, wearing a dress made entirely with the transparent material necessitates the use of an under slip. Currently, only a single piece of each item in a medium size is displayed on the racks. However, everything in the store can be customised for size, said Dukle who plans to add a collection of party wear to Adie soon. Prices start at Rs1,800 for tops.
