Goddess Gagged’s Siddharth Basrur Performs His Solo Material

You may know Siddharth Basrur as the vocalist and frontman of popular metal group Goddess Gagged. Or you may have seen him performing at one of the “early sets” at Blue Frog with either one of his two singer-songwriter side-projects, the now-defunct Bones For Bertie with Ayan De, and Things That Fly, the cover duo he formed with Goddess Gagged band mate Arman Menzies. You might also remember him as the lead singer of early-noughties alternative outfit Kinky Ski Munky and the short-lived Dog Ate Disco and Groovelab. Over the past few months, Basrur has been working on his solo album Chasing Rain, which he hopes to release by October. Basrur, whose voice bears more than a passing resemblance to that of 3 Doors Down’s Brad Arnold (though he says he’s not influenced by the American act at all), will perform most of the tracks from the upcoming set, at Blue Frog this Tuesday, August 7 with a backing band featuring guitarist Jishnu Guha, bassist Adil Kurwa and drummer Zain Calcuttawala, who have played in such Mumbai-based groups as Spook and The Colour Compound. The songs have been “inspired by but don’t sound anything like” singer-songwriters such as the UK’s Newton Faulkner and Canada’s City and Colour, says Basrur.
