Attend A Gig by The Sufi Gospel Project
If you missed the Delhi-based Sufi Gospel Project when they performed in Mumbai last November as part of the National Centre for the Performing Arts’ Sufi music festival Sama’a, then you’re in luck—they’re back in our city again, for a gig this Thursday, August 9, at Blue Frog. Tickets were sold out in advance for the NCPA gig, which was held at the 300-capacity Experimental Theatre; Blue Frog, on the other hand, can pack in approximately double that number of people. The Sufi Gospel Project, which is led by singer Sonam Kalra, is known to blend songs like “Amazing Grace” with verses by the likes of Amir Khusrau. (Click here to hear what that sounds like).

Caught the act in Delhi and while the concept sounds good, I’m not sure the two sounds come together too well. Sonam has a strong voice and her Sufi singer is brilliant, but some of the gospel songs are a tad tired because of how much airplay they get. Not to mention the happy-happy tinny piano that tends to make it all sound like lobby music. The Delhi crowd loved them though!
