Art of the Day: Empire of the Sun

Like we initially did, you may think that the table fan (see image) is causing the image of the sun on the computer to flicker ever so slightly. And then you might realise that that’s entirely impossible. Key learning: don’t try and make logical sense of the various elements in Shreyas Karle’s “Sitting behind the sun”, installed in a room at Project 88. The image, Karle says, is deliberately meant to confuse the viewer as they spy their ghostly reflection in the screen in front, but are somehow located directly behind the sun. The sun features in many of the works in Karle’s solo show entitled “Empty studio and other works!” “In Zurich there is no sun, even during the summer months,” says Karle who just completed an artist residency in the Swiss city. “So my whole quest was to find the sun in my art.”
