• Medal Tally. India claimed its first medal at the London summer Olympics, when shooter Gagan Narang won a bronze in the men’s 10m air rifle event. “It is like a huge stone is off my chest,” said Narang, 29. • Power Cuts. About 300 million people in northern India suffered the country’s worst power crisis in a decade when a blackout, lasting more than 8 hours, rolled through eight states, including Punjab, Haryana, the National Capital Region and Uttar Pradesh. Union power minister Sushilkumar Shinde laid blame on three states—UP, Haryana and Punjab—for being “greedy” and overdrawing power. [Hindustan Times]
• New York Landmark. New York City’s iconic Plaza Hotel has been sold to the Sahara Group for $570 million, which will give them a controlling stake in the 105-year-old luxury hotel jointly owned by Israeli-owned Elad Properties and Saudi-based Kingdom Holdings Co. The hotel will continue to be managed by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Inc, which has managed the hotel since 1999. [Reuters]
