Attend A Grateful Dead Tribute Gig
It was only a matter of time before Mumbai’s best-known jam band paid tribute to the world’s best-known jam band. This Wednesday, August 1, the former lead singer of Something Relevant Aazin Printer and his erstwhile band mate, STR drummer Jehangir Jehangir will host a tribute to the Grateful Dead at Blue Frog, on what would have been the 70th birthday of former de facto frontman Jerry Garcia. Printer and Jehangir have roped in a host of indie music scenesters who share their love for the group to play the show. The pair put together a house band comprising Jehangir, keyboardist Tala Faral, bassist Kenneth Rebello and guitarist Hitesh Dhutia, who will be joined on stage by guest vocalists Ankit Dayal and Rohan Rajadhyaksha of Spud In The Box, Pradeep Mathews of The Mavyns, Rohan Majumdar of The Colour Compound, Rachel Varghese, and Anushka Jagtiani.
Printer, who occasionally covered the Grateful Dead’s tunes during Something Relevant gigs, said that this concert marks his return to the singing circuit after he quit his band eight months ago. “I wanted to stop singing for a while,” said Printer, who is now working on his debut solo album. In the meanwhile, he has become somewhat of a tribute specialist with his participation in shows celebrating the music of Bob Dylan, Deep Purple and Michael Jackson. While the Grateful Dead are one of the most covered groups around the globe, their songs, with their changing time signatures, aren’t quite as easy to reinterpret as those of the aforementioned acts. On the other hand, the improvisational nature of their music—it’s said that every concert of theirs featured a different version of each of their songs—has made them a favourite with jam bands. Expect to hear their most famous tracks, including “St. Stephen”, “Uncle John’s Band”, “Truckin”, “Sugar Magnolia” and “The Music Never Stopped” during the tribute.Tags: Aazin Printer, Blue Frog, Grateful Dead tribute, Jehangir Jehangir, Music
