Liberty Cinema To Host Music Performances

The city has got a new performance venue in the form of the 63-year-old Liberty Cinema. The art deco cinema, which is among the most well-preserved and architecturally rich movie theatres in Mumbai, also happens to boast acoustics that make it an ideal spot for music performances. Thus, in an effort to increase falling footfalls, the management has decided that it might be a good idea to begin hosting concerts. The inaugural event will take place this Wednesday, July 25, and it’s a free gig headlined by rapper Microphon3, whose ode to Mumbai’s “Yari Road” we told you about last week. Microphon3, or Tanmay Bahulekar to his folks, plans to also throw in some of his other recent city-centric rhymes, including “Forever Bombay”, “Mumbai Local” and the just-released ”Traffic Jam”, during his hour-long set. The concert, which will also feature a set by rock cover band Copyright Issues, is the first of what Liberty hopes to make a series of gigs at the cinema. Other events on the anvil include orchestra recitals, plays, and Indian as well as international film festivals in collaboration with cultural organisations and consulates, along the likes of the recent showcase of French cinema put together by Alliance Française in June.
