Pothole Tally Now 6,000 And Counting
• Potholes Count. According to the BMC, the last 24 hours of rain have added over 300 potholes to the city, bringing the total number of identified potholes to over 6,000. The most number of potholes were found in Juhu and Andheri (West), and 281 out of the 332 identified were on roads constructed in the last five years. [Hindustan Times]
• Death of an Actor. Veteran Hindi film actor Rajesh Khanna succumbed to ill health on Wednesday, July 18, at his Bandra home. The actor, born as Jatin Khanna in Amritsar, has an unbroken record of 15 consecutive box office hits between 1969 and 1971. Khanna was 69 at the time of death. [The New York Times]
• Mumbai Nightlife. Members of Maharashtra’s legislative council announced that they did not intend on killing nightlife in Mumbai, but would continue to crack down on irregularities in bars and pubs. During the assembly, state home minister R.R. Patil expressed support for the Mumbai police. “Does the House want the police not to conduct raids?” Patil said. “We need to understand there is a large-scale use of illicit drugs in parties, the money from the sale of these substances is being used for anti-national activities”. With regards to police high-handedness during raids, Patil said that “if there is a complaint against a cop crossing his limit, we will act on it. However, a good cop with good intentions will get government support”. [The Times of India]
