The Vigil Idiot: Cocktail
First, the good things about director Homi Adajania’s Cocktail. It’s a great movie to look at! Although, I suspect a lot of that has to do with newcomer Diana Penty (she plays Mira) being on screen for a substantial amount of the runtime. And Deepika Padukone’s legs (as seen on the character of Veronica) have put in their finest performance in a short, but memorable career. But that’s about all I took away from this film. It lost me the moment it showed Saif Ali Khan’s character (Gautam), a software engineer who gets all the ladies. I mean, come on! Of course, that’s not the only place where the writers forgot to keep it real. Keep scrolling and see for yourself.

The best part of the movie was your review. You have captured the movie exactly as is.
……..
Loved this one too! Especially the line about Veronica’s life being more intense than a Flo Rida video!
Superb strip.
You saved my valuable time.

Haha!! couldn’t agree more.. the only respite were some of the songs!
Cheers,
Ashima
Sahil, Get out of here, man… These guys have turned you into an Yash Raj Movie – All glossy and censored….. You were great the way you were….
hey anybody cud strip down a muvi…even the gud ones or a serial inside out by writing it that way…..anything sounds like that wen u write it with THAT much sarcasm……Logic is u hav to turn ur brain off wen ur watching a chic flic….cz basically every romantic flick has turned cliched ……d second u turn ur logic on…….d muvi is ruined for u…..like forever.
P.S : Quit complaining …wen u folks r dat good that u figured out wat kinda trash dis muvi wud b just by watching the promos…….den u shudnt havv gone to watch it in the first place….
My simple question…if COcktail is that bad …. Wat kinda movie was Singham & Dabang & Bodyguard Btw!!!!??? cz walkin out of a speeding scorpio shooting assasins…. or salmans shirt automatically ripping apart in dabang or Bodyguard ( god y was that muvi even made again??? ) ……tel me how one of those 40yrs old doing things like that make sense enuf to gain rave reviews but sumhow this one dsnt?????
O also about ur SOuth Africa VIsa comment………..If they start showing every bloody detail…….then a muvi wud take forever to get over,,,,…… just thot u shud know
I. Will. Pay… for comic strip productions of inane Bollywood movies.
However, I’m also currently funding a free for all Webcomic… so, sucks to be your audience.
But genius work with the strip. Unfortunate for us all that these types of flicks get mad marketing and hype… but the awesome get relegated to Indie blogs + film festivals. (Not that those are bad… just not commercial. Not that commercial is good, just not obscure. I’ll stop. )
I actually was expecting an xkcd inspired strip here.. but this turns out to be even better…

)
I din spent any money on the movie thanks to torrents..
But this is 10 minutes of the movie well synopsized (i made up dat..
Once again Thank You .. Sahil .. Nice wisecracks
Awesum………
hahaha
Awesome!
I read the reviews. I knew what I was getting into. But I watched the entire, ENTIRE movie for .. Yo Yo Honey Singh. I kid you not. Best thing about the movie! Which is why I am a bit disappointed that they did not find a place in your otherwise fantastic panel.
lovd….it :p
Damn funny!! too good Sahil!! u jus made my day
thanx 4 saving my 350….:):)
Tell me what kinda movie do you people like ? i mean the one who has written this review and people who have commented…
do u like movies in which people are flyin takin one puch – singham / dabang
in which there is mind blowing action – Mission Impossible / Terminator
movies in which a bunch of people fly a tank ! – A Team
movies in which ET life form are shown – Avatar / Independence day
in which the world is shown like we have never seen before – Ice Age / Narnia / Jurassic Park !!
You will be surprised that most of these movies are “FANTASIES” and far far away from ‘REAL’ and have won awards as well !!
Guys get real – movies are not real PERIOD
If you don’t like movies for what they are please stop seeing them and posting misguiding reviews and comments !!!
From the trailers, I could tell what kind of a movie this would be. When Deepika says ‘If I wear Indian clothes, will your mom accept me”. That did it. I avoided the movie like a plague.
It’s ridiculous that women are still shown as extremes in bollywood! Either goody goody or a vamp! And men get to play a range of different characters…even a 41 year old software engineer who gets all the laideeez.
Ridiculous.
Even though I haven’t watched the movie, had a great time reading this. Isn’t it what most Hindi movies are about nowadays. A truckload of crap!
Thanks for saving my time!
Take a helmet with you if you watch the movie. It will help as you bang your head against the seat in front of you.
@anuja – good catch on the summer in both hemispheres.
It’s not that bad if you read between the lines (not exactly though). What is it that Veronica suggested in the very beginning – a threesome. Is she kinda making a move on meera – well, all through the movie. Did she suggest a threesome again – yes, during drunk melodrama. Did meera liked the idea – no, barring the climax which left it for us to guess (including were they just plain unhappy to see Archie ditching Betty for Veronica in the comic world?). But, you are right. A cheesy 40+ over the top guy hitting on Lassies in their twenties is the only creepy thing about the movie.
\respect/
I guess all the guys who had to see this movie were forced by their wives and/or gfs and all the girls saw it because of the wardrobe being flashed by Deepika.. The real damage of this movie is not the permanent decay of my brain cells but the shopping binges my wife will want to go to now to get her update close to Deepika’s
This is awesome!! What a great way to begin my morning
thank u ra:)
Most times i give these “kind” of movies a miss. But reading your strip more than makes me feel happy. Bach gayi main…. Great work. Your strip is usually better than the films you jab at. : )
brillliiiiant.. you reallly good with this ..hahaha..enjoyed it more than the movie..hahahah
Awesome Read…entirely killed off the office monotony!!

Waiting for your take on Kya Super Coll Hai Hum!!!!
Dude, you rock!!! I am in your debt for all the savings I made till date by not watching these type of movies.
Take a bow, dude, take a bow \m/
I enjoyed reading this
He was acting as a 30 year old but didn’t look the part, is the point made!!! Too many inconsistencies, I agree. Some Indian Critics actually gave it a good review- Anupama Chopra!!
Well Saif in the movie was 32 and not 40…so ur last strip is incorrect..hahhaha anyways loved ur review though…crap movie
Thanks Sahil for the review..
I believe that the movie was very much inspired by ‘Love Aaj Kal’ … And specially the second half.- the way Saif follows her to Delhi..the dialogues… Etc etc.. :-/
Why couldn’t they have left it as a love story between Deepika and Diana? They have much more chemistry between the two of them than either of them has with Saif…of course, it is not possible to have chemistry with a lump of wood.
The last strip takes the cake!
Superb Sahil.. Well done. This movie should have been called “LOVE AAJ KAL 2″. WOULD HAVE EARNED MORE VIEWERS BECAUSE OF THE SEQUEL TAG.
WAITING FOR BOL BACHCHAN STRIP. PLEASE DO NOT DISAPPOINT BY NOT MAKING IT.
Bless your do-gooder heart!
I hope you go straight to heaven for the service you provide to humanity.
Awesome as always! Did not know that the Vigil Idiot has a column on Mumbai Boss
I was waiting for quite some time for the VI’s take on Cocktail.
bash, bash! the movie deserves it. Too many songs, and Pritam even stole ‘Yellow’ for ‘Yaariyaan’ , like the rest of the songs weren’t enough already!
“Talk to the non single hand”.
Bahahahaha! Made my Monday morning
Awesome… hope they continue making crappy movies so you never run out of stock….
Great going!
While this is bang on, I would still recommend a watch.. It’s damn good for the eye candy, everyone will agree, and for quite a few good laughs! It has its cringe moments, but if you’re forewarned, you’d laugh them off too. It’s a good movie to kill time over.
If only people would hire you to do script reviews before a film is made… So much money, time, energy and resources can be saved….
Dude seriously… You must do this damage control in time!!
Fan of Your reviews.
Sweksha!
thanks dude…for saving my money on the movie….
Kudos! Reading this was the only thing that finally relieved the headache I got after watching that train wreck of a movie!
Thank you!! thank you, for saving my time, my money and my sanity!!!!
I can never thank you enough for all the favors you have done to me in the past with your reviews
There you go…! Very true..!
I still am in shock after watching this crap movie..!
and…did anyone notice that its summer both in London and Cape town..hemispheres, geography?whats that??
Almost sounds like an update of the 70′s Manoj Kumar films, where the disco and pub going heroine or hero’s sister inevitably gets near-raped and “mends” her ways, becoming most sanskari in 2nd half.
What’s with Indian media (both Bollywood and TV) and their penchant for regressive ideas? Imtiaz Ali created a very strong female character in “Socha Na Tha”, that unfortunately flopped. Now, he seems to have taken life-time contract to supply material for Vigil Idiot’s panels. First Rockstar, and now this. Yikes!
And to think that I was seriously making plans to see it..thanks for the heads up, Vigilante Idiot!
But surely Ronnie’s legs are worth it, what?
zomggg should i mail u the money i wasted on the movie and pop corn and that equivalent to 2 and a half hours of my sanity sahil???? cuz this comic strip felt like a balm on the wound inflicted by the movie. n saif seriously u look like a pervert romancing 20 yr olds. .
