Sign Up For Gyaan Exchange’s Indian Classical Music Workshops
Over the past month, every show the National Centre for the Performing Arts has hosted at its 1,000-capacity Tata Theatre of Broadway and Beyond, a Raell Padamsee-produced concert-of-sorts featuring performances of popular songs from musicals such as Chicago and Jesus Christ Superstar, has sold out days in advance. When the NCPA hosted its annual Indian classical music festival Bandish last weekend, the tickets, though priced lower than those of Broadway and Beyond were still available a day before the event. While comparing Broadway musicals to Indian classical music may seem like pitting apples against oranges, the fact that Bandish featured some of the country’s best vocalists made us wonder why, unless the bill includes a superstar act like Zakir Hussain or Hariprasad Chaurasia, the audience for Indian classical music remains stagnant at best.
The NCPA, of late, has made a concerted effort to widen the appeal of the genre within our city, frequently holding “Chalk Talks” and screening documentaries such as Khayal (which incidentally they will show again this weekend), to help elucidate Indian classical music for the layman. Should you be hungry for more such primers, sign up for website Gyaan Exchange’s music appreciation workshops at The Art Loft this weekend. On Saturday, July 14, Indian classical singer and teacher Kumar Shashwat will introduce participants to the history of the tabla, while on Sunday, July 15, he will guide them through the different vocal techniques in Hindustani classical singing. Both workshops will be 90-minutes long and will include a short recital by Shashwat and a chance for participants to try their hand at the tabla or take a shot at singing.
