British artist David Shrigley is so widely beloved among his fans that they don’t even mind that Shrigley has ventured into T-shirt, greeting card and tattoo territory with his droll cartoons. Far from being a sell-out though, Shrigley is considered something of a phenomenon, as intensely followed and collected as fellow Brit Banksy. Shrigley’s trademark neat black drawings, with their slyly deadpan captions, are being exhibited for the first time in India, in a 15-work show at the Mumbai Art Room. The drawings—no wider than a 12-inch ruler—show off Shrigley’s macabre sense of humour in deceptively childish form. Word play is an essential ingredient to the fun; even when words are scratched out and scribbled over, they dive into meta territory, self-referencing themselves in a sing-song effect that will have you recalling Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes by way of Stephen King. To describe them in any greater detail would spoil the fun. To see what the fuss—and chuckles—are all about, drop in for yourself.
