Ah, albums. No one buys them anymore, but that doesn’t stop musicians from making them or music fans from cherry-picking songs off them to load onto their iPods or phones. You can get a sample of what to expect on three upcoming releases at three gigs this week, each of them at Blue Frog. This Tuesday, July 10, guitarist Imli Imchen, who specialises in “New Age” fingerstyle playing, will play tracks from his debut effort, First Fret Boarding (listen to a couple of tunes here) both solo and with his eight-member (!) backing band, The Avatar Artists, which includes a keyboardist, a spoken word artist, a trumpet player and a cellist. An illustrator, who will paint while they perform, and Poi spinners will add to the action on stage. First Fret Boarding is the first release proper from the recently launched indie label The Random Dream Project.

Then on Wednesday, July 11, Bangalore-based rock trio Thermal and a Quarter will play a mix of old favourites and new tracks off their long-awaited fifth album 3 Wheels, 9 Lives, as part of a three-city tour of the country that the band’s calling a “sneak peek” of the new record (read our Q&A with the band here). On Friday, July 13, singer Vivienne Pocha, who you have probably heard in one of the countless jingles she’s sung or seen in one of the many musicals and concerts she’s performed, will preview songs from her first album. Inside My Head, slated for release in early September, has been written and produced by Blue Frog co-owner, composer and multi-instrumentalist Ashu Phatak. Phatak will be part of Pocha’s band at the gig, which will also feature Adrian D’Souza on drums, Kenneth Rebello on bass, Ramon Ibrahim on trombone, and Vinay Lobo on guitar. Saxophone players Rhys D’Souza and Shirish Malhotra will hop on stage to play on a couple of tunes.
