Matrimonial Markers. The number of marriages registered in the city grew by 20 per cent from 23,743 in 2010-11 to 28,465 in 2011-12, shows data obtained from the BMC. Nearly half of the marriages were registered in the western suburbs, with Borivali tallying up the highest numbers at 2,885, a figure that is being attributed to the rapid expansion of the suburb and the relatively affordable property prices in the area. Critical Time. The government and the Opposition have been quick to react to a Time magazine cover story that brands Prime Minister Manmohan Singh an “underachiever” and calls him out for being “unwilling to stick his neck out” on reforms that will help rejuvenate the country’s economy. Congress party spokesperson Manish Tewari dismissed the cover story, and said: “In the past eight years the UPA government headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has provided political stability, social harmony, internal cohesion, economic growth and a greater role in global affairs. This by no stretch of imagination is under achievement.” The BJP however was quick to latch on to the criticism and compared it to the relatively favourable view the American magazine had of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. “While a story on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was that he meant business and gave a message of prosperity, security, infrastructure development and progress for the country specially people of Gujarat, the other Indian who has been featured is Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is giving a message of despair, disillusionment, corruption, leaderless economy and downslide of Indian rupee,” said BJP leader Tarun Vijay. Tennis Triumphs. Switzerland’s Roger Federer won a record-equaling seventh Wimbledon title by beating home favourite, Scotland’s Andy Murray on Sunday evening. With the win, 30-year-old Federer became the oldest men’s champion since Arthur Ashe in 1975 and will return to the top of the ATP rankings for the 286th week, a total only matched by the US’s Pete Sampras whose Wimbledon record Federer just tied. There was disappointment however for Indian tennis fans as Leander Paes and Russia’s Elena Vesnina lost to the American pair of Mike Bryan and Lisa Raymond in the mixed doubles final. [Reuters]
