Paes, Bhupathi, Bopanna Out of Wimbledon Men’s Doubles
• Terror Plot. Abu Jundal, who was arrested in connection with his involvement with the November 26, 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, has reportedly told interrogators that the Lashkar-e-Taiba had planned to target the Nashik Police Academy. The LeT hoped to emulate at the Nashik training institute, their attack on a Lahore police academy in 2009, which they manage to enter with grenades and rockets. [NDTV]
• Bad Match. The Indian contingent at the men’s doubles matches at Wimbledon crashed out of the tennis tournament on Tuesday. Fourth seeds Leander Paes and the Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek lost to 15th seeds Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and Brazil’s Marcelo Melo in a five-set third round match, while Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna, who refused to partner with Paes at the upcoming London Olympics, lost to the unseeded pair of Russia’s Mikhail Elgin and Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in three straight sets in their second round match. Paes is still in the fray as he is set to play the second round of the mixed doubles competition with Russia’s Elena Vesnina. [The Times of India]
• Global Warming. According to the US National Climatic Data Centre, the global average temperature for May was the second highest since records were first compiled in 1880 and the hottest since 2010. While the March-to-May period was the hottest ever in the US, in India the looming chance of an El Nino effect dulling the monsoons in July and August does not bode well for the next couple of months.
