Dance to Tocadisco at F Bar, Lounge and Diner Tonight

There are a few things that make tonight’s gig by Tocadisco aka German DJ-producer-multi-instrumentalist Roman Böer somewhat special. For one, it comes at a time when most clubs in our city are staying away from hosting electronica gigs. Unusual for a DJ night, it’s being held on a Thursday, one that also happens to be World Music Day. Last but not least, the venue F Bar, Lounge and Diner has kept the entrance fee at a relatively affordable Rs800 per head, which is far cheaper than the Rs3,000 cover charge they levy on weekends. Over the course of his 16-year career, Tocadisco—whose name is the Spanish word for “turntable”—has remixed tracks by everyone from New Order, Pet Shop Boys and Enigma to Arman van Buuren, Bob Sinclair and David Guetta. In an email interview, the Cologne-based house and techno DJ, who plays the drums, guitar, bass and piano, told us how he will know his gig tonight has been a success. Edited excerpts:

Who would you say are your biggest influences?
I don’t really have one person to name. I’m influenced by everything. The people on the dance floor, good producers, outstanding songs, even movies, and life in general merges into my music and other art I do.

Is there that one person who has taught you much of what you know?
Hahaha…myself! I taught everything to myself. I’m not a good student and not a good teacher. I always do three things at the same time: check emails, listen to music and watch a movie…I’m very impatient.

You’ve remixed some of the biggest electronica acts in the world. Who’s your personal favorite and why?
Moby. He is the best. Great person, [great] artist…I’m just working on new project with him.

How important do you think it is for electronica musicians to know how to play an instrument?
Nowadays, it’s extremely important. Dance music has become melodic again. If you have no idea of music scales, you have a problem.

What’s your idea of a successful gig?
Nice and open-minded people, a great sound system, and a bottle of champagne.
