Something Relevant, Ankur Tewari To Play Blue Frog

Ankur Tewari.
Earlier this week, members of genre-melding jam band Something Relevant excitedly announced on their Facebook pages that they were going to be playing their first Friday night gig at Blue Frog. Their exhilaration was understandable, considering that weekends at the Lower Parel venue are usually reserved for big-ticket electronica acts. What they didn’t mention was that they had been booked as replacements for Miss Nine aka Dutch progressive house DJ Kristin Schrot, whose gig at the club this Friday, June 15, was cancelled presumably because of what is being dubbed, for lack of a better term, the Dhoble Effect. Miss Nine’s gig at the Delhi branch of Blue Frog will go ahead as scheduled on Saturday, June 16. Hindi indie singer-songwriter Ankur Tewari and his band, the Ghalat Family were already scheduled to perform at the Mumbai outpost on Saturday, but their set was to be followed by one by Mmat and Char Lee from electronica collective Bhavishyavani Future Soundz. Now, Tewari will play until closing time. While Blue Frog are taking a “no comment” stand on their decision to change their programming this month, the folks at Bhavishyavani have been vocal about the scrapped show, posting the following comment on their Facebook page for the event:
EVENT CANCELED DUE TO POLICE/LEGAL ISSUES … HAVE FUN AT HOME , DISTURB YOUR NEIGHBORS WITH LOUD MUSIC , SEE YOU AFTER THE MONSOON
It’s thus clear that Blue Frog is taking the better-safe-than-sorry approach, and it’s easy to see why. Even though it was not reportedly as extensive as the raid at neighbouring restaurant Cafe Zoe, the cops also visited the club on Friday, June 8, when British trance DJ Eddie Halliwell was forced to cut his performance short a little while after he took the stage. He expressed his dismay via Twitter, saying:
That has to be one of my shortest sets ever… club got shut down by the police 10mins in, gutted! Hopefully can reschedule soon
Bonobo, another venue where Bhavishyavani frequently hosts gigs, is yet to hold the June edition of its widely popular Wobble night. Fortunately, not all clubs in the city are cancelling their DJ gigs. The progressive trance duo Lost Stories performed at Bandra venue Royalty last night while F Bar Lounge and Diner will host Hyderabadi techno DJ Murthovic tonight. Also on the bright side is that both Something Relevant and Ankur Tewari are immensely popular acts currently working on their sophomore albums. Their gigs should be a sprightly mix of old favourites, new tunes and at least some amount of Dhoble bashing.

Ankur Tewari and the Ghalat family was simply brilliant! If Dhoble had shown up he would be a fan too.
