Ever attended a stand-up comedy gig and said to yourself, “I could do that”? As part of its upcoming comedy theatre festival Cheer!, which will be held from Friday, June 22 to Sunday, June 24, the National Centre for the Performing Arts will hold a series of workshops for aspiring stand-ups or simply those who want to learn the location of their funny bone. The workshops, which will be conducted by popular comedian Sorabh Pant and his East India Co.medy troupe, will cover the major aspects of being a professional funnyman (or woman). On Friday, June 22, Pant and Varun Grover, the head writer of online comedy show Jay Hind!, will conduct a sketch writing workshop where participants (limited to a maximum of 50 people) will be shown how to develop gags and characters. On Saturday, June 23, Pant will focus on stand-up comedy, teaching participants (limited to a maximum of 50 people) how to write and perform routines. On Sunday, June 24, Pant and his colleagues, Aditi Mittal and Abish Mathew, will turn their attention to the art of improv in the third and last workshop (limited to a maximum of 30 people). Each workshop will be accompanied by a related show at 8.30pm on the same day (the stand-up comedy workshop, for instance, will be followed by an open mic night where six to ten of the participants will get to test their freshly acquired skills). Registrations begin today, Friday, June 1 for the workshops, which will be held between 2pm and 5pm, and are priced at Rs1,500 each (Rs1,200 for students with valid ID cards).
