The Good Buy: “Antilia” T-shirt

What message does a 27-storey home, which reportedly occupies an area greater than that of the Palace of Versailles, send to the residents of a city where 60 per cent of the population is estimated to be homeless or living in slums? Mumbai-based radiologist/cartoonist Hemant Morparia, whose work you’ve likely spotted in Mid-Day, Mumbai Mirror and Time Out Mumbai magazine, believes he knows exactly what Mukesh Ambani is telling the rest of us with his 550 feet-tall building that towers over Altamount Road. Morparia put his thoughts into a comic strip, which proved so popular that it has now been made into a T-shirt thanks to the folks at Wear Your Opinion, a city-based company that crowd-sources ideas and designs tees through their website Wyo.in. The focus is on T-shirts with a message related to “Indian social and political issues” though the lines and concepts could also just make for a fun pun (like, for instance, the tee that says “Mere Paas Maal Hai”). Wear Your Opinion pays contributors a flat Rs5,000 fee for the use of their designs plus 5 per cent of the sales proceeds for each T-shirt sold after the first 300 buys. They retail, on the other hand, at Rs399 during the first week of sale and for Rs499 thereafter. See here to browse Wear Your Opinion’s inventory and to buy the Antilia tee.
