Get Tandoori Raan Delivered To Your Doorstep

Most people in Bandra know the Bazaar Road-based Jeff Caterers as a biryani shop. Mateen Khan, the owner of Jeff Caterers sells over eight kilos of biryani a day to customers who either purchase it as a boxed meal for one, or in large volumes to serve at parties. His hole-in-the-wall shop also does brisk business selling fresh batches of mutton samosas, chicken cutlets, chicken lollipops, grilled chicken, and kheema baida roti, which are sold over the counter and replenished several times a day. For a handful of loyal customers residing between Colaba and Jogeshwari however, Jeff Caterers is better known for delivering cooked raan (leg of lamb) to their doorstep. Khan has over 50 customers who frequently order the raan, which is priced by the kilo.

While this coveted hunk of meat, acquired from the hind legs of a lamb, generally gets pride of place on menus at Mughlai and frontier restaurants, the raan is seldom served whole. It’s common practice for chefs to serve the succulent meat as manageable cuts in the form of an appetiser or a main course. Khan, however, believes that raan tastes best when served whole. Jeff Caterer’s menu offers tandoori raan, as well as raan with chicken biryani. Khan buys the meat, trimmed of its fat, from several vendors including Modern Mutton Shop off Linking Road. At his Bazaar Road kitchen, the raan is marinated in a special in-house tandoori masala for about two hours, after which it is slow-cooked in a bhatti (clay oven) for over six hours. Once the meat is tender to the bone, it’s left to cool for a couple of hours before it gets wrapped in foil paper for home delivery. For the benefit of people not well-acquainted with raan, Khan’s delivery boys are also trained to help guests reheat and carve the meat at the time of delivery.

The raan, which is priced at Rs650 per kilo, has to be ordered three days in advance. Jeff Caterers also serves roasted whole lamb, which has to be ordered five days in advance.
