Watch OK World at Blue Frog

Shrikanth Sriram.

Only at Blue Frog could a gig be sold with the tag line “a flamenco guitarist & 3 percussionists from 3 different continents” without any mention of the performers’ names. We’re guessing there just wasn’t enough space to list them all on the large vinyl display near the club’s entrance that highlights some of the upcoming month’s performances. However, we can’t help but conjecture that it’s also banking on its reputation for bringing quality world music acts to our city to make people believe that such geographical diversity is assurance enough that the show will be worth it. That or the fact that the two artists whose names are printed are a pair of widely acclaimed instrumentalists who have become regular features on the Lower Parel establishment’s yearly roster: UK-based, genre melding, Indian bassist-flautist Shrikanth Sriram and Norwegian nu jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft. The concert is in fact the debut performance of OK World, a new “supergroup” formed by Shri and Wesseltoft that includes the aforementioned flamenco guitarist and percussionists. They are: Josemi Carmona from Spain, drummer Amade Cossa from Maputo in Mozambique, darbuka and bendir player Khaled Yassine from Beirut and Mumbai’s very own mrindangam player Vivek Rajagopolan. Which leads us to believe that while the folks at Blue Frog sure know their music, their skills at geography are debatable.
