Watch ‘Interpreting Tagore’ by Astad Deboo at St. Andrew’s Tonight
If you missed Indian contemporary dance pioneer Astad Deboo’s latest production Interpreting Tagore when it was staged at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in November last year, we recommend you catch it tonight, Monday, February 13, at the St. Andrew’s Auditorium. Interpreting Tagore features the underprivileged children and young men from the Salaam Balak Trust whom Deboo choreographed for his 2009 production Breaking Boundaries. The four pieces of Interpreting Tagore, each set to a different poem by Rabindranath Tagore, are partly auto-biographical and they touch upon such personal subject matter as Deboo’s initial struggle to find acceptance within the Indian dance community. As with all of Deboo’s productions, it features a variety of practices, drawing in elements of kathak, chhau, puppetry, Sufi whirling and even yoga.
