Catch Joseph Lelyveld at Jnanapravaha
If you didn’t make it to the Jaipur Literature Festival, you may find some consolation in the news that one of the speakers, the
author of Gandhi-might-be-gay tome Great Soul, Joseph Lelyveld will be in town on Thursday, February 2, to deliver a talk on the father of our nation. Lelyveld, a former executive editor of The New York Times, became embroiled in controversy last year after suggesting in his biography that Gandhi may have had a not-entirely platonic friendship of sorts with a Jewish architect by the name of Herman Kallenbach (read our review of the book here). Lelyved will be “in conversation” with art critic and curator Ranjit Hoskote, so you can expect the talk to be focused less on Gandhi’s sexual-orientation and more about his struggle to rally the people of India, his own personal demons and the endurance of his legacy around the world.
