British Comedy Show ‘Just A Minute’ Comes To Mumbai
America has Betty White. The UK has Nicholas Parsons. Eighty-eight-year-old radio and TV presenter Parsons has been hosting the popular comedy game show Just A Minute on BBC Radio 4 since 1967, and for some reason, part of the programme’s 45th anniversary includes a performance in India, at The Comedy Store. If you’ve played or watched Just A Minute at college festivals, you know that the game involves speaking extempore on a given topic for 60 seconds. The wittier your words, the higher the points you score. The college event is a variant of the radio show, which is a panel game where participants have to talk “without hesitating, repeating a word or deviating from the topic”. Though “small words” such as “my”, “the” and “if” are permitted, if a contestant breaks any of these rules, the other panelists can “challenge” him. If their challenge is proved right, they takes over the mic. Parsons will host the Mumbai edition of Just A Minute, which will be held on Wednesday, February 1. The contestants are British comedians and JAM regulars Marcus Brigstocke and Paul Merton and Mumbai-based funny men Cyrus Broacha (read our review of his new book here) and Anuvab Pal (read his paean to biryani here).
