Dualist Inquiry.

Five great gigs will take place this Saturday, January 21. Our handy guide to helping you pick:

YORK LIVE
Where: York Winery, Nashik, Gat No.15/2, Gangavarhe Village, Gangapur-Savargaon Road. Call 96577 28070 for further information
When: From noon to 10pm.
Tickets: Rs900.
Organised by Nashik-based winery York, this wine and music festival will feature headlining sets by two multi-instrumentalist/composers who have pioneered their own unique blend of electronic and Indian sounds, namely UK-based Shri, who will perform another edition of his Shrilektric series of gigs, and US-based Karsh Kale, who will perform a rare solo set. Other performers include popular Mumbai-based band Something Relevant, Australian beatboxer, saxophonist and flautist Mr. Woodnote and singer-songwriters Alisha Pais, Tek and Ayush Shrestha.

TERRY RILEY
Where:
Tata Theatre, National Centre for the Performing Arts, NCPA Marg, Nariman Point. Tel: 6622 3737.
When: At 7pm.
Tickets: Rs200, Rs300 and Rs500.
Dumbledore-resembling American composer and Western classical pianist Terry Riley is one of the founding fathers of the style of music known as “minimalist”. Riley, best-known for his composition, “In C” which comprises the playing and repetition of 53 short musical phrases, also studied Indian classical music under US-based vocalist Pran Nath. His solo recital at the NCPA will feature works from 1979 to 2008, including one he composed for his long-term collaborators the Kronos Quartet (“Songs from the Old Country”) and one that combines elements of ragtime with those of raga Nat Bhairav (“Requiem for Wally”).

LIVE FROM THE CONSOLE
Where: Recording Studio, First Floor, Mehboob Studio, Hill Road, Bandra (West). Call 99675 39983 for details.
When: Doors open at 7pm.
Tickets: Rs150 per head.
As a result of whisky brand Rowson’s Reserve coming on board as a sponsor, Live From The Console goes from a monthly event to a fortnightly series starting this month. The second January gig will be electronica centric, featuring sets by electro-rock guitarist/composer Dualist Inquiry aka Sahej Bakshi and electro-pop act Bramfatura. The odd one out is singer-harpist Nush Lewis who will open the show, which will be preceded by the screening of Modulations, a 1998 US documentary about the evolution of electronic music. The night will end with a specially curated playlist by Dualist Inquiry that will be played over the PA.

MTV UNPLUGGED MINICERT FEATURING KAILASH KHER
Where: Hard Rock Cafe, Bombay Dyeing Mills Compound, Pandurang Budhkar Marg, Worli. Tel: 2438 2888.
When: Doors open at 8pm.
Entrance fee: Call the venue for details.
Kailash Kher was not one of the ten acts who appeared on the first season of the Indian edition of MTV Unplugged. Kher did however appear on CokeStudio@MTV and he also headlined the “mini concerts” or “minicerts” (as the folks at MTV like to call them) organised by the channel after the end of that series. His presence often helps pack the house (as it did at those gigs) plus his band Kailasa has a new album to promote, so we’re guessing it made sense to bring him back. Expect a mix of his soundtrack and Hindi pop hits as well as tracks from the just-released Rangeele.

GRIME RIOT DISCO
Where: Cool Chef Cafe, Thadani House, 329/A Worli Village, Worli Sea Face, off the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, near the Indian Coast Guard office. Tel: 2430 1127.
When: From 9pm.
Entrance fee: Rs250.
The city’s most popular underground party (an irony if there ever was one) is back with a pair of DJs, both of whom spin a diverse mix of genres. There’s DJ Ruskin, who you may recognise from one of his many gigs at Blue Frog and who plays everything from progressive house to soul and disco mash-ups, and Germany’s DJ Ipek. Berlin-based Ipek Ipekcioglu is known for her eclectic electro sets that include music from the Balkans and even some Bollywood. As always, you need to register via the event’s Facebook page to get in.
