Watch Punk Ass Orifus at Blue Frog Tonight

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sidd Coutto, now officially the Jack White of Indian indie rock (both are members of multiple bands), will stage the debut gig of his newest act, Punk Ass Orifus today, Wednesday, January 18, at Blue Frog. Coutto, who you may know from his work with Zero, Helga’s Fun Castle, Tough On Tobacco, Three Guys and A Girl, Ankur Tewari and the Ghalat Family, Alien Chutney or for his solo material, will premiere tracks by the band he formed late last year. Featuring Coutto on vocals, TOT band mates Gaurav Gupta and Johan Pais on guitar and bass and Zorran Mendonsa on drums, Punk Ass Orifus, as you will learn from the music on their Soundcloud page, is not a punk band. The group, like the aforementioned Coutto-fronted acts HFC and TOT and his solo stuff, makes amiable pop-rock where the lyrics often alternate between lightness and dark: a funny phrase could be followed by a sharp line, but you might miss it because you’re too busy bopping your head along to the tune. The gig billed as Tough On Tobacco by Blue Frog will also feature songs by that group, as well as a surprisingly under-hyped opening set by power-pop pioneer, former Big Star and The Posies member Ken Stringfellow.
