India Women Over Boil Milk
• State Spending. Maharashtra spends just .5 per cent of its state domestic product (SDP) on healthcare, and just 1.3 per cent on education, the lowest among all major states. Bihar and Uttar Pradesh both spend more on social sector services than Maharashtra, despite the coastal state having the third highest SDP per capita in the country. The state also fared poorly in alleviating poverty, with 30.7 per cent of the state classified as poor, as against an all-India average of 27.5 per cent. [The Times of India]
• Spilt Milk. A study on the milk boiling habits of Indian women has found that most women over boil milk, causing it to lose its nutritional value. About 49 per cent of those surveyed boil milk more than three times before consumption, 56 per cent boil it for more than five minutes, and 73 per cent do not stir it while boiling. According to health guidelines, milk should be boiled not more than twice and not for more than two-three minutes. [The Times of India]
• Match Fixed. The three Pakistani players accused in a match-fixing scandal have been sentenced to various terms in prison by a court in London. Salman Butt, the captain of Pakistan’s national team was sentenced to a 30-month term; Mohammed Asif to a one-year sentence; and 19-year-old Mohammed Amir to six months in an institution for young offenders. A fourth man, agent Mazhar Majeed was sentenced to 32 months in prison. [The New York Times]
