No State For Old Women

Senior Citizen Life. Maharashtra is the most unsafe state in India for elderly women, with 104 women above the age of 50 murdered in 2009. Tamil Nadu, with 93 deaths, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 81, came second and third respectively. Overall Maharashtra is the fourth most unsafe state for senior citizens of both sexes. Real Estate. After months of speculation, the US Consulate in Mumbai has put up two of its landmark properties—Washington House on Altamount Road and Lincoln House at Breach Candy—for sale. The properties could fetch the US government around Rs1,500 crore. Lincoln House, which is the residence of the consul-general and once belonged to the Maharaja of Wankaner, was given on a 999-year lease to the US government half a century ago. The consulate will shift all offices to a 10-acre complex in Bandra Kurla Complex. [Indian Express]

Airport Security. On the basis of US intelligence reports on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, airports around India beefed up security measures after the central government issued a warning that terrorists could attack Mumbai airport using a small plane or helicopter. The intelligence directive also asked authorities to verify the hiring of small planes and helicopters, and to keep an eye on private helipads and non-functional airports. [Hindustan Times]
