What Rs4 Crore Gets You

Designer Ashiesh Shah’s Pedder Road digs are featured in The New York Times, a cosy 1,075 sq. ft. place that he bought for Rs4.1 crore. Shah, who’s described as an interior designer to Bollywood stars, spent an additional Rs50 lakh on the interiors, converting the two-bedroom duplex into a one-bedroom studio. Shah says he looked at 40 apartments in seven months before settling for the “dark apartment” in a boxy, five-story building that shares neighbourhood space with Messrs Ambani and Birla. While Shah’s superb art collection—he has an inflatable doll by Max Streicher, a painting by T. Venkanna, a sculpture by Anita Dube, a taxidermy eagle by Shine Shivan and a “menstruation” chair from the 1900s—makes the place something akin to a gallery, we’re mildly depressed by the fact that all $1 million gets you is four walls and a “courtyard” view that’s essentially a littered space fenced in by three building walls. Still, see the pics and drool over the art. View the slideshow here.
