Nobu the Chef (Not the Restaurant) Headed To Mumbai

Nobu Matsuhisa.
Is Nobu, the hallowed chain of Japanese restaurants, likely to have an India outpost soon? You will have to ask the founder, celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa himself, as he is headed to Mumbai, for the first time this November. The chef is expected here for “The Enchantments of India”, a five-day culinary event, which will be catered by a team of 25 chefs from the London branch of the popular restaurant. The event will take place from Thursday, November 11 to Monday, November 15 at Villa 39, a six-month old Italian restaurant in Colaba, which will be completely made over by Nobu’s team in London, and one from India. “Nobu was clear he didn’t want the standard five-star hotel setting for this event. Since we’re part owners of Villa 39 we suggested it as a venue and he liked it,” says Gaurav Assomull, CEO of Marigold Group, a Delhi-based luxury company.
Nobu, who opened his first flagship restaurant in New York in 1994 (he now has 22 around the world), has been widely hailed as a pioneer of modern Japanese fusion cooking. Honouring this tradition, chefs at Nobu London have drafted a menu, which will see, perhaps for the first time, the marriage of Indian and Japanese cuisine. The menu will be catered to Indian tastes, so special attention will be lavished on spice levels and vegetarian dishes. However, Nobu favs like the miso-marinated black cod, rock shrimp with spicy mayonnaise and new style sashimi, will also be on offer.
This international tour includes two luncheons and five dinners, out of which three dinners on November 12, 13 and 14 will be supervised by Nobu himself. While he isn’t expected to prepare a meal (he will spend most of his time interacting with guests), Assomull informed us that he will supervise the kitchen. Though these three dinners are by invite only (two of them have already been booked by private parties), you can still book tickets for the remaining meals, which will be accompanied by music and dance performances. Assomull says the venue can only accommodate 110 guests, of which only a limited number of seats remain. So hurry and sign up!
