The Farmers’ Market Returns
Organic food junkies can resume their Sunday routine of purchasing locally grown, organic produce from Mumbai’s Farmers’ Market, which is back at its Bandra venue starting this Sunday, October 3. The city’s first Farmers’ Market was launched by econutrionist Kavita Mukhi in March this year and went on hiatus in May for the monsoons. Like last time, there will be plenty of veggies (cauliflower, capsicum, coriander, brinjal, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, spinach, etc) and fruits (oranges, sweet lime, banana, papaya, pomeagranate and custard apples to name a few), in addition to organic rice, honey, jaggery, pulses, ghee, paneer and milk.
There’s also more by way of organic cosmetics, clothes, aroma oils, detergents and other home cleaning agents. To cater to the demand from South Mumbai, Mukhi is bringing the market to Flamboyante, a restaurant at the World Trade Centre in Cuffe Parade on Sunday, October 10 and then to the Cricket Club of India in Churchgate on Sunday, October 31. “Even though we’ve had a great response we end up seeing the same faces at the market,” said Mukhi, who wants people who cook with organic produce to set up catering stalls. “I intend on taking the market to Goregaon and Powai next because more people need to make use of this.”
The market will also have a lineup of fun activities for children ranging from treasure hunts to creative writing workshops. “The idea is to change the eating habits of the city,” said Mukhi, who plans to start giving hour-long talks on nutrition, and living and eating healthy at the market from November.
On Sunday, October 10, the Farmers’ Market will take place at Flamboyante, World Trade Centre Arcade, Ground Floor, Cuffe Parade. On October 17 and 24, the market returns to its Bandra venue. For more details, see the Farmers’ Market Facebook page.
