Frank Gambale Heats Up the Jazz Gig Calendar
It’s been a good year for jazz fusion fans in Mumbai. Guitarists Scott Henderson and Mike Stern and bassist Victor Wooten have performed in the city during the past two months, and today, May 4, guitarist Frank Gambale will take the stage at the St. Andrew’s Auditorium along with bassist Stu Hamm, and drummer Joel Taylor. Henderson, Wooten and Gambale share at least one thing in common: each of them has been part of legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea’s Elektric Band. Henderson and Gambale share one more: both of their tours has been organised by film composer Sandeep Chowta, who has collaborated with them on his long-in-the-works jazz fusion album Matters of the Heart.
Guitarists, both established and upcoming, look up to Gambale for pioneering playing techniques such as sweep picking (see video). We’re not sure how many will show up to see the veteran Australian musician though, because unlike all the aforementioned concerts this year, which had tickets for Rs500 or less, you’ll have to shell out at least a grand to watch the powerhouse guitar player in action.
