Batting for the Underprivileged

There are probably as many, if not more, kids who want to be professional cricketers in our country as there are aspiring Bollywood actors. A group of four cricket-crazy friends is attempting to do a little something for the former group by organising a tournament for underprivileged children at Azad Maidan this week.
Latitude 18’55 Commerce House, a company formed by Mumbai-based software engineer Anil Agarwal, Bangalore-based MBA student Fahad Merchant, Dubai-based banker Saif Hussain and Hussain’s wife Sadaf Khan, says the idea is to provide a platform for “players who haven’t got the chance to showcase their talent, owing to lack of funds or connections.” Four teams, comprising under-19s from Dharavi and Mira Road, will play against each other in 20-over knockout rounds on Thursday, April 29.
The team that wins the finals on Friday, April 30, will take home prize money of Rs 11,000, while the “star of the tournament” will be given a cricket kit from Protos. While that may not seem like a lot, Latitude hopes to make a difference to the career opportunities of at least one of the players. They plan to enroll the star of the tournament in one of the top cricket coaching clubs, where they will finance his training.
