Jean-Baptiste Gaubert Paints To Mayur Narvekar’s Music at Volte

Jean-Baptiste Gaubert is a sound artist.
This evening, painter Jean-Baptiste Gaubert, and DJ and percussionist Mayur Narvekar will jam at art gallery Volte. They met this afternoon for the first time, and at 7pm tonight, you can watch them rehearse at the gallery for their gig at Blue Frog tomorrow night. At both events, which are being organised by Alliance Française, Gaubert will paint to the accompaniment of Narvekar’s music. Narvekar is a DJ and tabla player who is part of the popular Ahmedabad-based electronica act Bandish Projekt.
For Marseilles-based Gaubert, who has been painting to the sounds of rock bands for the past 10 years, this will be the first time he’ll be matching brushstrokes to electronic beats. Gaubert says he was inspired to mix music with art by Andy Warhol’s brief but fruitful collaboration with The Velvet Underground. His personal style, he says, is influenced by Jean-Michael Basquiat, another of Warhol’s collaborators.
Narvekar, who has never collaborated with a painter before, says his performances with Gaubert will be similar to what audiences see at Indian classical jugalbandis—they will watch each other closely, respond to what they see and hear, and improvise. A video recording of their work at Volte will be projected at Blue Frog tomorrow.
